What you need to know
The Equality and Human Rights Commission, and the new merged charity, Age Concern and Help the Aged, have joined forces to:
- investigate and develop understanding of the dynamics of equality over the life course, and
- identify solutions to address inequalities and disadvantage in later life.
We have commissioned research exploring a range of issues. These include:
- the implications of longer lives for traditional models of social justice
- the concept of intergenerational equity – a discussion about how resources are shared across generations, and
- the impact of trigger events on the later life experiences of different demographic groups.
We ran five seminars aimed at policymakers throughout 2009, the first of which took place in June. At each seminar, we explored and discussed issues raised by new research and think pieces with a view to finding ways in which to address disadvantage and its causes in later life.
On 15 December 2009, we reported our findings.
